Hygiene and prophylaxis
Is meant by hygiene and prophylaxis all those maneuvers that have as their purpose the removal of the factors that can determine gingival inflammation and caries. These factors are represented primarily by plaque and tartar.
Plaque is a conglomeration of bacteria organized which are deposited continuously on all the surfaces of the teeth and of the mucous membranes of the cheeks and the tongue.
Tartar is the calcification of the plaque when it is not promptly removed by the machinations of home hygiene. The tartar as plaque can be located on the teeth both above the gum and below the gingival level.
Plaque that remains on the surface of the grooves, the points of contact between the teeth and the collar of the teeth, in the presence of predisposing conditions, it is responsible for the formation of caries, while plaque and tartar deposited at or below the gingival sulcus, and is responsible for gingivitis.
Gum disease, if neglected, results in paradontosis or the so-called "involves" that undermines the foundations of the tooth. That is why it is crucial to perform constantly and periodically the professional tooth cleaning.
